The majority of ships in use today capable of FTL travel utilize hyperdrives. Using a torus of energized erchius fuel being pumped through it, a tunnel can be temporarily formed for the ship to enter at speeds 89% that of the speed of light, propelling them into hyperspace or from hyperspace to realspace. Hypedrives only dip into fuel reserves whenever forming a tunnel in and out of hyperspace. On-board computers calculate entry and exit points to avoid collision with any possible objects that may be in the way. Once within a hyperlane, warp drives are used at lower speeds to further accelerate this travel time.
