The speed of light cannot be broken through conventional means with the current model of particle physics; but despite this, multiple methods of FTL travel have been discovered, one of which is the Warp Field drive, also known as the Alcubierre Drive. Theorized by the human Miguel Alcubierre over a millennium ago, the technology in the 33rd century uses the anomalous properties of erchius fuel to warp gravity around the ship.
Warp Field Drives propel ships faster than light by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, allowing FTL capable spacecrafts to move "faster" than light by essentially decreasing the distance to their destination. Warp drives can be used to travel between different systems in realspace, but it is most commonly used to traverse hyperlanes while in hyperspace.
