Point defense systems are a hardpoint mounted defensive gun that typically fires a conical blast of projectiles, such as ballistic flak or a spread of pulse lasers that uses automated targeting to attempt to destroy incoming drones or missiles before they have a chance to reach the hull of the ship. Such defenses are poor against most other weapons and have short range, but can easily destroy potentially devastating missile payloads or enemy drones and interceptors. Point defense systems rely on the ship's functioning radar to target incoming payloads.
