A rugged figure moved through the smoggy depths of the fallen city, dirty gray rags wrapped around their body stained with ash and blood. In their gloved hand they held a Noskov Detector labelled with the logo of the Lapetian Authority. With a careful dexterity, they slipped a testing strip into the detector and glanced down at it behind cracked goggles. They reached to their hip and pulled up an old, blocky device resembling a radio - simple and dated. They grunted and spoke into it:
"Readin' a sixer'. Ay'm close- tha' gotta' origin yet?" They asked as they drummed their finger against the side of the blocky radio. A noisy female voice buzzed back out, "Target's name was Gertrude- watuh baron's daughter."
"Cause o' death?"
"Murdered. By 'er own brother."
The rugged figure breathed an uneasy sigh, "A murdered heiress. Fuck. Ash, I dealt with a revenant-class last week, why do they keep giving us this shit?"
"Welcome to Siren's Call, Addie. Murders left and right, can tha really blame a defiant for wantin' some revenge?"
"Yes, when it's pain up my-" Addie was cut off by a shimmer of light; when they looked up from their radio, the buildings in the smoggy background were purple silhouettes, and they were ankle deep in a warm red fluid. They shouted into the radio and unholstered their pistol; an old laser pistol with a bit of tape on it, "Fuck, Ash, it's an eidolon! I'm already in the manifest- gotta' be a grade three at least. Ash? Ash! Fuck!"
Most brains can function for over 10 minutes after bodily death. Out of every human experience imaginable - and unimaginable - death is undoubtedly one of the most traumatic events a brain can experience. As such, death itself can become a burning catalyst for the subconscious will that commands psionic power; abilities that persist long after their psion's death in order to enact some last will, curses of revenge cast upon killers, ghosts born from the twisted minds of a psion awakened from death - postmortem psionics are a prime example of how dangerous psionic abilities can truly be, to friends and foes alike.
As an awakening event, death is highly dangerous due to the intense and traumatic nature of deaths, especially violent ones. Feelings of revenge can cause a dying mind to psionically lash out, neurons firing patterns of desperation that can lead to unpredictable, malevolent effects such as curses. In other cases, an individual who psionically awakens from death can turn into something twisted, an immortalized version of their dying state called a defiant.
Postmortem Psionics
Psionics after death can be a powerful storytelling tool- vengeful curses, ghostly revenants born from a delirious, dying mind. Some psionic abilities can also persist after death under certain circumstances, depending on the subconscious will of the psion and the circumstances of their death. This can be especially true for curse-type abilities. If you want a psionic ability to persist after death, speak with your grader or create or modify an ability app and have it approved.
