The most common substance that psions can create that is closest to actual matter is called faux matter. Faux matter is materials or objects made from a psion’s flux — it isn’t real matter, but depending on the psion’s visualization abilities it can get pretty close. Faux matter is made when psions imbue certain qualities, appearance, and physical or even chemical properties to their flux, and then typically separating it from their main flux pool into an object, material, or construct. Because it is made of flux, faux matter will begin to decay if not sustained by the psion, simply becoming less and less detailed until it is dissolving flux.
The creation of faux matter depends widely on a psion’s ability to visualize something. Created objects will only have qualities that the psion is able to visualize, and may not appear correctly unless the psion engages in visualization and memorization training on what they want to create, typically through exercises such as drawing the object, feeling it, and measuring and memorizing every detail about it. If an object is created without training, it may appear strange, born from the psion’s preconceptions about an object. When we visualize most objects, we never take into consideration factors such as its texture, its mass, scale, and dimensions, so a faux object will often have incorrect values in place for missing information — it may be of wrong scale, dimensions, and it may even lack color. Psions typically actually create the faux matter by visualizing it over their vision — the best faux objects are studied to such an extent that the psions can actually hallucinate the presence of the object, and then simply will it into existence. More complex objects are harder to create, especially objects with moving parts or matter that is chemically reactive. Faux objects also tend to be their ‘ideal version’, lacking imperfections and blemishes, and they also show up as flux to someone with cuilsight, or to a cuilometer.
The uses for faux matter are incredibly varied. Faux matter can take many forms, and can even be phased into phase matter by the psion. With proper training, a psion can create animated constructs out of faux matter, and use faux matter as a conduit for their other abilities.
