Author Note: Vortices are fairly unstudied anomalies, as most are barely visible to the naked eye. Hyperspace species may know about them and they may be encountered while venturing in higher ECF spaces.
A vortex (pl. vortices), also called a 'fracture', is a spatial anomaly typically small in size. Vortices act as 'windows' to hyperspace or other strange dimensions, and typically cause the area around them to have a heightened ECF among other certain effects. Vortices are not portals to hyperspace per se unless somehow 'opened', but rather simply points in space with stronger connection to it. Most vortices are invisible to the naked eye and around the size of a fist, increasing the ECF of a small area by only a few cuils. Some vortices, however, are strong enough to be visible to the naked eye; they may be larger and they may glow, and increase the ECF of an area more. When viewed with cuilsight, they become bright and significantly more visible, allowing them to be found more easily.
Vortices can be found in areas of higher ECF. Vortices can also exhibit unique properties; some vortices for example are unstable, fluctuating to different ECF levels and even emitting dangerous spikes of cuils that can cause unpredictable anomalous effects. Some may be fading out and die, and others may exhibit different properties entirely. Some vortices exhibit effects completely different from those related to hyperspace, opening interesting theories as to their origins.
Vortices are one of the few ways that cuil flux can naturally generate.
